Massive Renovations at City Park Golf Course Set Stage for 2021 Opening

Following a total renovation, City Park Golf Course has set the stage for a revitalized 2021 golfing experience for Park Hill residents.

The updated course design offers:

Nestled across from the Denver Zoo, City Park Golf Course provides fun for the whole Park Hill family—whether you are looking for a round of golf, a great lunch with a view, or some lessons for the kids.

Details of the Renovations

The City Park Golf Course redesign was a revitalization of the entire campus

With extensive community input, the course was modernized to improve playability without sacrificing the historic Parkland-style look and feel.

“It was a complete renovation,” Director of Golf at City Park Golf Course Scott Rethlake said. “None of the holes are the same, making it an exciting new challenge for Denver golfers.”

One of the major features of the renovation was the integration of a storm water detention system designed to help mitigate and reduce flood risks in surrounding neighborhoods.

By installing a 102 inch pipe under the golf course, water flows into a pond on the west side of the property. The pond then overflows into a channel lined with plants to soak up sediments and minerals before the water returns to the original pipe.

“With this new system, the golf course floods where we want it to, instead of flooding the surrounding neighborhoods,” Rethlake said. “And with the new water feature on the west side, it’s a much more interesting course for players.”

In addition to course renovations, the redesign also included the implementation of a full-size drive range for guests to hit woods. There are also turf tees available for wintertime use for you to keep your swing in shape through the off-season.

Need to work on your putting? There is also a large putting green that better represents the undulation of greens on the golf course for a more authentic warm-up.

As if 18 new holes, a revamped driving range, and an upgraded putting green weren’t enough, the clubhouse was also moved to overlook the Denver skyline and mountains. Serving as a flexible event area, private events can be booked by contacting the pro shop.

“The clubhouse has probably the best view in Denver,” Rethlake noted.

City Park Golf Going Forward

Following a three-year shutdown for renovations that began on November 1, 2017, the City Park Golf Course reopened for limited use on September 1, 2020.

While the 18 hole course and putting green will be closed through the winter, golfers can still enjoy an outing at the driving range followed by a lunch with a view at the clubhouse.

The course is scheduled to reopen for play on April 1, 2021, weather pending.

Although construction is totally complete, fencing surrounding the course will remain in place to prevent unauthorized winter activities and unnecessary foot traffic that could damage the turf during the winter months.

The golf course serves as a unique addition to the Park Hill neighborhood of East Denver. It’s not often that a full-length 18 hole golf course can be fit into a city landscape, making it yet another vibrant addition to the number one neighborhood in Denver
